When to Change your Spa Filter Cartridge

When to Change your Spa Filter Cartridge

From crisp Fall nights to cool summer evenings, there’s nothing quite like getting into your hot tub and enjoying a nice relaxing soak. That’s why proper maintenance of your spa and especially your spa filters is so important.

While we receive a lot of questions about how to properly maintain one’s spa, a question that always seems to come up time and time again is “how do I know if I should replace or clean my spa filter cartridge?" If this is something that you’ve wondered about before, have no fear. We’re breaking everything down so that you have a clear understanding as to when it’s time to clean and when it’s time to replace. Let’s get started…

How Often Should I Clean My Spa Filter?

As a general rule of thumb, you should be rinsing your filter cartridge out about twice a week and giving it a thorough cleaning at least every two weeks. However, this could change depending on climate and usage. The more you use your hot tub and the hotter it gets will require you to clean and rinse out your filter cartridge more often, to extend its lifespan.

In addition, when you change your hot tub water, which should be about every three months, it’s important to take this time and soak your filter cartridge in a non-foaming, filter-specific cleaner. We always recommend Natural Chemistry Clarifier Clear. Again, this will help your spa filter cartridge last longer!

How to Clean Your Spa Filter Cartridge

This then begs the question “well how do I properly clean my cartridge?” Don’t worry, it’s relatively easy.

  1. Grab your hot tub filter cleaner solution and pour it into a bucket that is large enough so that the filter can be submerged.
  2. Turn off your hot tub! It’s important to remember that you should never be running your hot tub while the filter is not in place.
  3. Remove the filter and check to see if there is any visible damage.
  4. Rinse the noticeable buildup before soaking it and remove anything that may be caught in the pleats such as hair, sticks, or leaves.
  5. Add the filter to the bucket with the cleaning solution and allow it to sit overnight.
  6. Remove the filter from the bucket and soak it, spraying with enough water to remove any excess residue from the cleaner.
  7. Then let the filter dry completely before adding it back into its designated spot. Once put back you can turn your hot tub back on!

When to Replace your Spa Filter Cartridge

You know what they say “nothing lasts forever.” Including your spa filter! A great rule of thumb is that your filter should be replaced every 2 to 3 years and that is with regular soaking and possible rotations with two or more sets. However, with that being said, there is still a possibility that you may have to change your filter cartridge earlier.

Here are some telltale signs that indicate that it’s time for your filter to be replaced:

  • Cleaning becomes more frequent: Do you find yourself constantly cleaning your spa filter? Then it may be time to replace it! If you start noticing that the filter needs to be thoroughly cleaned or rinsed down more than once every two weeks, it’s a sign that it could be clogged with minerals and oils.
    1. Water clarity: Take a look at your spa water. Do you notice that it constantly looks dull and dirty, even if the chemical levels are balanced? Again, this is another sign that highlights the filter isn’t doing its job and could be clogged up. If that’s the case, it’s time to replace it.
  • Damaged filter: When you go to clean your filter it’s important that you take the time to inspect it, looking for any rips or tears. A damaged filter is, sadly, quite useless for your spa. So if you notice any signs of damage, be sure to head out right away to purchase a replacement.

It would be a lot easier if your filter could simply change colour when it was time to be cleaned or replaced, but unfortunately, it’s not that easy! However, these tips and tricks will help make managing and maintaining your spa and its filter cartridge a lot simpler. As always, our team is here if you ever need us.
