How to Extend your Chlorine Dollar

How to Extend your Chlorine Dollar

With inflation on the rise and a chlorine shortage on the horizon, a lot of our customers are wondering how they will be able to maintain and manage their pools this summer. Well, luckily for you, we have some tips and tricks that will go a long way! We recently posted a few of our favourtite chlorine substitues that could help you manage your pool and keep it clean, clear and bacteria-free. Today, we're going to give out some of our favourite tips that will help you lower your chlorine usage and extend your chlorine dollar, saving you money this season.

1. Test Your Pool Water Regularly

When your water chemistry is out of balance, additional chlorine is required to rebalance your levels and sanitize your pool. That is why testing your pool water regularily is so beneficial. Not only will you be able to catch water issues quickly, you'll also be able to get by using less chlorine. If you don't already have some, be sure to stop by any of our locations and purchase some reliable test strips or kits for your pool.

For reference, it’s important to keep your pool water chemicals between the following levels:

pH: 7.4 to 7.6

Total Alkalinity: 80 to 120 ppm

Cyanuric Acid: 30 - 50 ppm

Calcium Hardness: 200 - 400 ppm

2. Switch to Stabilized Chlorine

The Sun is incredibly damaging, especially for chlorine. In fact, a great deal of the chlorine that you add to your pool is usually destroyed by the sun. To prevent this from happening and to make the most out of your chlorine, try switching to a Stabilized Chlorine. Stabilized Chlorine contains Cyanuric Acid which is like a water conditioner that protects the chlorine and prevents it from being destroyed by UV rays. This will help your chlorine last longer!

3. Add an Enzyme-Based Product to Your Cleaning Routine

Chlorine is not as effective in breaking down organic contaminants which are caused by sunscreen, body oils, cosmetics, pollen, and sweat. So, you typically have to use a lot more chlorine to break down this matter, compared to if you used an Enzyme-Based Cleaning Product. We highly recommend Pool Magic’s PHOS free as it helps to easily break down these contaminants into your water, making them harmless to your pool's health. If you have any questions about these types of cleaning products or how to use them for your pool, feel free to ask any of our staff members!

4. Filter Your Pool Water

Your pool water is highly dependent on being sanitized, well filtered, and properly circulated. If one of these three elements is not in play, you’ll typically experience a green or cloudy pool. While we’ve covered some of the ways to help sanitize your pool without overusing chlorine, it’s also worth mentioning that proper water filtration will also help to lower chlorine usage. Be sure to clean your pool filter regularly, run it for at least 8 hours per day, use a water clarifier to help get rid of fine particles and invest in a good vacuum system. These key things will help ensure that your water is properly filtered and cleaned, which also helps to lower chlorine usage.
