Hey everyone,
Now that we are half-way through winter, some of us we are already looking ahead to spring, and anything that can make getting our pools up and running as easy as 1-2-3.
It’s with this in mind that we recommend reading about what you can do to be ready for a smooth pool opening come spring.
In this blog, we cover:
- Your winter cover check-up
- An equipment and water care check-in
- When to plan to open the pool

Winter Cover Check-Up
For pool owners with a classic Winter Cover, think about the following:

Remove any heavy debris that has accumulated on top of the cover, as long as it can be done safely
Adjust the position of your cover, as long as it can be done safely. This helps reduce exposing your pool finish to the elements and will help reduce algae growth in spring.

Ensure all your Water Bags are in good shape, haven’t leaked, and are still in place.
Check on your cover cables/straps and ensure they are still tight. A loose cable or strap will cause the cover to start to slip out of position.

If you have an above-ground pool, consider using a Winter Cover Sealer around the perimeter of your pool, which will help keep your cover secure and extend it’s life.
Do you have a Safety Cover on your pool? Consider the following:

Ensure all the anchors are still securely affixed to your pool deck/surround
Remove any heavy debris that has accumulated on top of the cover, as long as it can be done safely.

Check your cover for any visible signs of wear and tear, check for the beginning of any holes. Should you have tears starting, fix these early with Safety Cover Patches and significantly extend the life of your cover (and the life of your investment!).
Equipment & Water Care Check-In
Keep your eye on the weather, especially if the temperatures rise above freezing for any decent length of time – it’s a perfect time to get outside and inspect your equipment, pipes and the condition of your water.

Tackle non-organic contaminants, such as bird droppings or pollen, by adding our favorite product, Natural Chemistry’s Pool First Aid, which can be easily poured into your pool via a lifted corner of your winter cover, or poured directly through the mesh of most safety covers. This product breaks down non-living organic contamination that has made its way into your pool over the winter. This product also reduces phosphate levels in your pool, which if left alone can also cause slow algae growth. Added bonus with this item? It will help prevent that pesky waterline ring that is hard to scrub off in the spring!
Tackle organic contaminants by using a product with biocidal properties, such as long-lasting HTH Extra Algimycin which will help maintain the pH levels through the winter months.
Plan to Open Early
The very best way to prevent algae from getting out of hand in the spring is to open your pool early because the more the spring temperatures increase, the more algae will grow!
