How to Eliminate Hot Tub Foam

How to Eliminate Hot Tub Foam

We’ve all been there before, unfortunately. After a long, hard day, you’re ready to jump into your hot tub for a relaxing soak when you remove the cover, only to see a layer of foam. This is not only unsightly, but it’s also a telltale sign that your hot tub has an excess of bacteria.

While it’s important to know how to get rid of this layer of foam, it’s just as important, if not more so, to understand what causes it and how you can prevent foam from occurring in your tub. In this blog post, we’ll go through both topics so that you can prevent your hot tub season from any interruptions.

What is Hot Tub Foam?

You're probably wondering what could have caused this reaction in your hot tub to get this thin, annoying, and rather unsightly layer of foam to occur. The answer? A build-up of organic bather waste. This can include lotions, sweat, skin cells and detergents.

Hot tub foam is a rather common problem that many owners will experience at least a few times in their life. It is made when the water mixes with air and surfactants (which is a lower surface tension between liquid and gas). When this occurs, the end result is… you guessed it! Foam. This foam often takes the shape of the soapy, bubbly look that we’re all used to. But it can also appear cloudy, making the water murky and white.

What Exactly Causes Foam?

Now, as we mentioned before, failing to properly sanitize your hot tub water is the main culprit of the creation of foam. This is because different substances can end up in your water after prolonged or heavy use, causing the water to become unsanitary.

These substances can include:

  1. Personal care products; substances such as lotion, hairspray, sunscreen, and laundry detergent.
  2. Dead skin cells: When you and your family use your hot tub frequently, dead skin cells shed and add to the water, which throws off its chemical balance.
  3. Food and drinks: While we don’t recommend that you eat or drink while soaking in your hot tub, we understand that these activities sometimes occur. Crumbs and spills can seriously play with the pH level of your hot tub water, causing your chemicals to become unbalanced and your water to be unsanitary.

In addition, if the pH level of your water is not balanced or is off, this can also lead to the water becoming cloudy and foam being created.

How to Get Rid of Foam

The good news with hot tub foam is that with the help of chemicals, it’s quite easy to get rid of. The first thing you’ll want to do is test your water to see if there is an imbalance and to get a sense of which chemicals need to be added to adjust the pH levels. Using enzymes is also a key step in eliminating hot tub foam. The following products will assist in getting rid of hot tub foam.
