How to Avoid Heat Loss from Your Hot Tub

How to Avoid Heat Loss from Your Hot Tub

During the colder winter months, nothing is worse than climbing into your hot tub only to find that it’s a few degrees cooler than how you typically like it. This not only leads to a less enjoyable hot tub experience, but it could also lead to higher energy bills.

The good news is that there are a few things that can be done to avoid heat loss from your hot tub. All of which will add to a more enjoyable spa season as well as prevent your energy bills from skyrocketing.

So, here is how you can avoid hot tub heat loss this winter season;

Invest in a Good Quality Cover

Did you know that 80% of heat loss happens because of a poorly manufactured or an old and outdated cover? If your hot tub cover has become heavy or is super hard to manage, it’s usually a telltale sign that it has become waterlogged and is no longer providing efficient insulation against heat loss.

This is why investing in a good quality cover, as well as ensuring your cover is up to date, is so important. While the costs may be expensive upfront, it will save you time and money in the long run.

In addition, proper hot tub cover maintenance is also a key factor here. By taking care of your cover, you will not only extend its lifespan (a well-maintained cover will last about 5 years) but also will help prevent heat from escaping from your tub.

Set up Your Spa for Success

Another key factor that will help prevent heat loss is to program your spa accordingly. When you know your hot tub won’t be in use for a few days, be sure to turn the heat down to preserve energy bills and prevent heat from escaping.

Alternatively, when you know that you and your family or friends will be using the hot tub more frequently, be sure to turn the heat up.

Control the Air Flow through the Air Valves

Running the jets on high in your hot tub can lower the overall temperature, as air is consistently being pushed through when the jets are on. To preserve heat and combat this issue, focus on controlling the amount of airflow through the air valves in your tub. By having them closed slightly, you can still obtain that relaxing, spa-like experience without having too much air pushing through to lower the temperature of your hot tub.

Place Your Hot Tub Accordingly

When preparing to set up your hot tub, it’s important to think about the positioning in your backyard. If you place your spa in a windy area, you’re setting yourself up to lose more heat during the cold and windy months. But, if you can place your spa outside of a wind tunnel or where your hot tub will be shielded, you can avoid this problem.

If your hot tub is already set up but is in a windy spot, try thinking of ways in which you can shield your spa. This may include designing a garden wall, planting shrubs, or installing privacy screens to help give your hot tub a break from the elements. It may seem like a small task but it will make a huge difference.

Ensure Proper Hot Tub Maintenance

To preserve heat, it is also essential that you ensure all aspects and elements of your spa are clean, clear and working efficiently. If not, elements of your spa will have to work twice as hard to get your hot tub water to the desired temperature. This is especially true for your filters, as dirty filters can restrict the water flow in your spa, leading to heat loss. To prevent this from happening give your spa filters a rise every week and chemically clean them every 3 to 4 months.

In addition, be sure to follow a weekly cleaning routine to ensure that the rest of your hot tub is well-maintained and set up for the best results.

When it comes to your hot tub, heat loss is far from ideal, especially during the colder months. However, with these simple tips and tricks, you’ll be able to set your spa up for success, conserve heat, and prevent your energy bills from skyrocketing.
