How To Close Your Above-Ground Pool

 
End of summer is a time to get your pool ready for the chilly winter months. If you want to protect your pool equipment from ice damage and keep your water clean and save your time and money in the spring, you need a proper pool winterizing. Winterizing a pool can be a very simple and painless process. If you follow step-by-step instructions with a little preparation, it will ensure a safe and effective pool winterization.
 
 
 
Prepare Your Pool One week before closing your pool, add 1L of Pool Magic + PHOSfree directly into the skimmer for every 95000 L of water.
 
 
Brush & Vacuum The Pool. To remove all dirt, leaves and debris, thoroughly brush and vacuum the pool.
 
 
 
 
Prevent Metal Stains. Add Omni Stain & Scale Control to prevent metal stains. For every 50,000 L add 1 L of Stain & Scale Remover by pouring it around the perimeter of your pool.
 
 
 
 
Adjust pH Level. Proper pH adjustment level should be between 7.4 and 7.6 for all pools. Omni pH Increaser raises a pool’s pH level immediately (Add 100g per 10,000 L). For vinyl-lined pools mix it with water in a large bucket before adding it to pool.
 
 
 
 
Adjust Total Alkalinity. Total Alkalinity should be adjusted to its proper level ranging from 120-140ppm for vinyl-lined pools. To easily adjust Total Alkalinity, use Omni Alkalinity Increaser by broadcasting around the perimeter of the pool. Just 180 g of Alkalinity Increase will increase the Total Alkalinity of 10,000 L of water by 10 ppm.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Adjust Calcium Hardness. Adjust the Calcium Hardness to 200-400 ppm using Omni Hardness Increaser to help protect your pool. Adding 100 g of Omni Hardness Increaser for every 10,000 L of water will increase the Calcium Hardness by 10 ppm.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Add Algae Control. Add one 100 ml of Omni Algaecide 60 per 10,000 L by mixing it with water in a large bucket and pouring it around the perimeter of your pool. Wait one hour before following the next step.
 
 
 
 
 
Shock The Pool. Shock the pool with HTH Super Shock at the rate 65 g per 10,000 L by mixing in a bucket and pouring it around the perimeter of your pool.
 
 
 
 
Adjust The Chlorine Level. Bring the appropriate level of chlorine – between 1.5 - 3.0 ppm.
 
 
Let The Pump Run. Let the pump run for at least one complete cycle after adding chemicals. This is usually 4-8 hours. Backwash or manually clean the filter.
 
 
Remove The Inlet & Insert A Winterizing Plug. Remove the inlet (directional or eyeball) fitting, which is located on the inside pool wall, usually 6″ to 12″ below the water line. Insert a winterizing plug into the inlet.
 
 
Lower The Water Level. Lower the water level to between 4″ to 6″ below the skimmer.
 
 
Remove The Drain Plugs. Remove the drain plugs from the pump strainer basket housing, the pump volute, the filter tank, and the heater. Keep the drain plugs handy, they will be used in next step.
 
 
Disconnect The Filter Hose. Disconnect the filter hoses from the skimmer fitting and the pool return fitting.
 
 
Drain The Automatic Chlorinator. Drain the automatic chlorinator, if you use one.
 
 
Move Equipment To A Safe Location. Move all the equipment you removed to a safe and non-freezing location, such as your basement.
 
 
Place Drain Plugs In A Strainer Basket. Place all the drain plugs in the strainer basket of the pump and replace the strainer cover.
 
 
Remove All Non-Permanent Articles. Remove all non-permanent articles such as ladders, hoses, over-the-top skimmers, etc. If you have an automatic pool cleaner, remove it and drain it completely. Lay the hoses out straight in a non-freezing location.
 
 
Cover The Pool. Cover the pool using a Winter Cover and Leaf Net. This may require the use of a cable and winch.
