Draining your hot tub depends on several factors, such as how often you use it, the number of people who use it, and what you add to it. As a general rule of thumb, you should drain your hot tub every 3 to 4 months. However, if you use your hot tub daily or have multiple people using it on a regular basis, you may need to drain it more frequently.
Over time, the total dissolved solids will increase in the water. Total dissolved solids are organic and inorganic substances which are introduced to the tub from bathers, chemicals or source water. When the level of dissolved solids exceeds 1500ppm, your hot tub water will start to look murky and will often produce foam. You will also notice the sanitizer level depleting at a much faster rate, leaving bathers vulnerable to skin irritation and disease. When you bring your water sample into DPSW for a monthly check, we will test your total dissolved solids and advise you when it is time to drain and clean your hot tub.
Due to the intricate plumbing, it is important that you drain and clean your hot tub properly. Every time you drain your hot tub, you must purge the plumbing lines, clean the shell of the tub and chemically clean your spa filter.
