How to Treat Your Pool After a Thunderstorm

How to Treat Your Pool After a Thunderstorm

While an evening of heavy rain won’t ruin your summer vacation, it can be pretty alarming for your pool! As most pool owners know, the day after a heavy rainstorm, their pool looks a little cloudy (or even sometimes green) and like it needs some TLC.

Not to worry though! Our Water Care expert has filled us in on all the details surrounding how to get your pool looking clear, refreshing, and back to normal in no time. So, whether the weather calls for rain or shine, you can rest assured knowing your pool won’t take a hit and will be ready to go when you are.

Why Your Pool Becomes Cloudy (or Green) After a Thunderstorm

It’s good to note that rainwater itself will not harm your pool, however, it will throw your water chemistry out of whack, as will the air when a storm is coming. Storms create nitrogen in the air, even when rain is not present. This environmental impact increases the demand for chlorine on your pool, utilizing more than necessary and lowering chlorine levels during the storm.

Mix the nitrogen in the air with rainwater that is altering the chemical balance of your pool and you have the perfect recipe for algae to grow! Sadly, algae can grow incredibly fast, which is why your pool can quite literally turn green overnight, or become incredibly cloudy. Luckily, this problem is not hard to fix.

Treating Your Pool After the Storm

Once the storm has passed and it's safe to head outside, it's best to start working on your pool right away. Here’s what we recommend focusing on:

  • Clean the debris from the pool: if your pool wasn’t covered (which we recommend doing so for next time), the storm may have brought in leaves, twigs, garden dirt and other debris that needs to be cleared away from around and in the pool. Don’t worry, we can fix this! Simply add an entire bottle of Pool Rescue and circulate the water overnight! This is also a good time to check the skimmer and the pump and your filters to ensure that nothing is clogged, and everything is working seamlessly.

  • Check Your Water Levels: If your water levels are too high, or too low, this would be a good time to access and fix it before you start working on your water chemistry.
  • Run your Pump and Filter the Water: After your water levels are in check it's good to filter and circulate your pool water before swimming in it, just to be sure!
  • Shock Your Pool: The NOW Maintenance Multi Shock is our go-to pool chemical for many reasons, however, it truly comes in handy after a thunderstorm. If your pool is looking cloudy, you’ll definitely want to add in 1 bag of NOW per 40,000L to give your pool a good shock and get it back to that crystal clear look. Trust us, this works like magic! If your pool starts to show signs of algae, please treat with 1 bag of Later per 30,000L.
