Converting Your Pool To Salt Water

Once you have decided to change your pool to a salt water pool, the first thing will be to select a good salt system. Following considerations you must take into account when selecting a salt system:Pool size: You need to know your pool size as salt systems range from 10,000 gallons tot 100,000 gallons. Always select larger unit on a smaller pool that will benefit you running the salt system for shorter periods of time and replacing your salt cell after longer time intervals. How to calculate your pool size is very easy. First you need to calculate average depth. That is the depth of the shallow end, multiplied by the depth of deep end, divided by two. You’ll get the size of your pool in cubic feet. Now you can calculate your pool’s volume: Multiply the length, by the width, by the average depth. Finally multiply your answer by 7.5 because there are 7.5 gallons per cubic foot. The formula to determine the volume of your pool is: Length x Width x Average depth x 7.5Budget: Cost range from $400 to $2000. Advanced systems have few fancy features including the ability to control all your pool equipment.Features: Some of the features include salt-readout, self cleaning, self diagnostics, digital readout and ability to control the pool equipment.Replacement cell cost: You need to replace your salt cell every 3-5 years and cost range from $200 to $700. It is important to consider this factor. For instance If you get replacement cell for $200 then you need to change it 3.5 times before it cost as much as replacing the $700 cell.

Conversion Steps

1. Location

Selecting location for salt system is simple. It should be installed after the pump, filter and heater and within proximity of the power source and control panel.Remove your chemical feeder and install your salt system in its place. To avoid any accident, you need to first turn off pool filter, heater and pump at the electrical panel. Use saw to cut out your feeder. Ensure to keep your cut straight so that attaching new salt system is not complicated.

2. Keep your plumbing straight

Extra turns and twists can make your plumbing more complicated. Install a PVC check valve to prevent water that has passed your salt system from backing up through your pump, filter or heater. Now install the salt system ensuring a tight seal and no leaks.

3. Mount the salt system control panel

Mount the salt system control panel alongside your pump switch, timer, and other pool controls. Now connect the power supply.

4. Adding Salt

Add the right amount of salt to your salt system that actually depends on your pool volume and salinity levels. If you are converting from a regular pool or from fresh water, the salt content of your pool water should be nil or zero. It is approximately 30 lbs of salt for every 1000 gallons of water in your pool. The manual you receive with your salt water system will also explain this in detail. Finally turn on your generator. Make sure your salt machine is off when adding salt.
