Circulation Basics

Circulation Basics

Circulation is a key factor that will make the difference between a fun, healthy pool environment and an unsafe, problematic one. All pool pumps should run for 24 hours. Without proper circulation, your filtration system will not work effectively nor will your chemicals be evenly distributed, therefore compromising the equipment's longevity as well as the overall water quality. When there is no circulation in the pool, we can not filter out debris or bather waste.

Lack of circulation will also allow bacteria and other microorganisms to adhere to the pool surface and start to reproduce. Some bacteria can double in population within 20 minutes.

If you do run your pump on a timer, it should be allowed to run for a minimum of 10-12 hours. You should also ensure that the pump is always running during the warmest time of the day, when there are swimmers in the pool and during the addition of chemical products. Weather conditions and various environmental factors can have an impact on the pool water as well, so during heavy rain or wind storms, it is best to keep the pump running. Pools can turn cloudy or green quite quickly and leaving the pump off for extended periods of time will ensure that what is saved in electricity, will be spent in chemicals to fix water quality issues.

Although the pump plays a major role in water circulation, the return jets also play a pivotal role in creating optimal circulation. Each return jet must be positioned a specific way in order to properly direct the flow of water. Each jet should be positioned at a 45° angle downwards and all should be pointed in the same direction, usually to the right.

Positioning the jets on a 45° angle downwards, ensures that we are not just moving the surface of the water. It is also much less likely that debris will sink to the bottom of the pool where it will sit on the floor and consume chlorine levels. Aiming the jets in the same direction will create a circular flow in the pool. This way the contaminants in the water are all moving the same way and can be easily caught in the skimmer.

Helpful tips

It is very important to have proper working jets and a good running pump so our circulation is never compromised, however here are a few helpful tips that can assist in quality pool circulation.

1. Maintain clean baskets. Check the skimmer and pump basket on a weekly basis and empty them if needed. Keeping these baskets empty and debris free will avoid stress on the pump and potential damage to the skimmer or the baskets.

2. Have a working pressure gauge on your filter. Make sure you check the pressure in your filter regularly and once it increases by 8-10PSI, backwash the sand or rinse the cartridge filters. A build up of pressure in the filter creates a need for the pump to work harder and will create a lack of water pressure coming back through the return jets.

3. Ensure the skimmer weir door is on and functioning properly. Weir doors are essential to the surface skimming ability in your pool. Due to the way the weir door is positioned, the water essentially sips just the top surface and removes debris and contaminants trapping them in your skimmer basket. When the pump turns off, the weir door closes to prevent any debris from floating out of the skimmer basket and back into the pool.

4. Help maintain low circulation areas by brushing the pool surface weekly. Every pool has “dead spots” or low circulation spots caused by a lack of water force being pushed over that area. These spots are usually found in pool corners or behind ladders. It is here where you will find settled debris such as leaves, fine dirt or algae. A dead spot is also home to stagnant water which is the perfect place for bacteria to collect and algae is encouraged to bloom. A quick brush over these areas every week will prevent issues from arising.

5. Use O-ring lubricant and Teflon tape where needed. The o-ring on the pump lid should be lubricated at least once a season. Using a proper o-ring lubricant is key. Petroleum based lubricants such as vaseline, will only comprise the o-ring and lead to cracking and stretching. The pump lid o-ring must remain in good condition so the pump does not suck air and can adequately and forcefully push water through the entire system. Threaded fittings on the pump should also have Teflon tape applied to ensure an airtight seal.
